Thinking about getting injectables for the first time? Welcome to the part of the internet where Botox, filler, biostimulators, units, syringes, and “preventative” treatments somehow all get discussed in the same 30-second video.
It can be a lot.
The good news? Your first appointment doesn’t require you to know exactly what you need—or even which injectable you want. That’s what a consultation is for.
At Elara Cosmetic Dermatology, we believe the best injectable treatments start with understanding your features, your goals, and what will actually make sense for you. So, before you book that first appointment, here’s your no-stress introduction to the world of cosmetic injectables.
First Things First: Not All Injectables Do the Same Thing
One of the biggest misconceptions about injectables is that they’re essentially interchangeable. They’re not.
There are a few main categories you’ll hear about:
Neurotoxins
Products like Botox® Cosmetic, Daxxify®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® temporarily relax targeted muscles. They’re commonly used to soften expression lines such as forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, and crow’s feet.
Think: less muscle movement = softer expression lines.
Dermal Fillers
Fillers are used to restore or enhance volume and contour. Depending on the product and treatment area, they may be used to subtly enhance the lips, restore cheek volume, improve facial balance, or soften certain folds and shadows.
Think: structure, volume, and proportion.
Biostimulators
Biostimulators like Sculptra® and Radiesse® take a different approach. Rather than simply adding immediate volume, these treatments can help stimulate your body’s own collagen production for gradual improvement over time.
Think: playing the long game with collagen.
And yes—you can eventually use more than one type of injectable as part of your treatment plan. But your first appointment does not need to become a facial overhaul.
You Don’t Need to Walk In Knowing What to Ask For
This one is important.
You absolutely can come in saying, “I think I want Botox, but I don’t really know.”
In fact, we would much rather hear about what you’re noticing than have you feel like you need to self-diagnose your face based on TikTok.
Maybe makeup has started settling into your forehead lines. Maybe you feel like you look tired even after a full night’s sleep. Maybe your lips have always felt slightly out of proportion with the rest of your features. Or maybe you simply want to know what your options are.
Those observations are much more useful during a consultation than trying to decide how many units or syringes you need before you arrive.
Your provider can evaluate your facial anatomy, muscle movement, proportions, skin quality, and goals before recommending a treatment plan.
Translation: you bring the goals. We’ll help with the game plan.
Will I Still Look Like Myself?
This might be the first-timer question.
And the answer should be yes.
Good injectable work isn’t about changing your face into someone else’s. It should work with your natural features.
At Elara, our approach is intentionally thoughtful. We want to preserve expression, respect your natural proportions, and make recommendations that enhance rather than overpower your features.
Sometimes that means treating conservatively during your first appointment and reassessing once everything has settled. More product isn’t automatically better product.
If your biggest fear is walking out looking “done,” tell your provider. Seriously. That’s valuable information when creating your treatment plan.
Does It Hurt?
We won’t tell you that you won’t feel anything—because there are, in fact, needles involved.
But most injectable appointments are very manageable.
Neurotoxin injections are typically quick and feel like a series of small pinches. Filler and biostimulator treatments can vary depending on the area being treated, and your provider may use techniques or comfort measures to make the experience easier. Plus, many filler products have lidocaine powder within the product that gets released as you are being injected.
And the actual injecting portion of your appointment is often much quicker than first-timers expect.
Basically: probably less dramatic than the scenario you’ve created in your head.
What About Downtime?
One reason injectables are so popular is that most treatments require relatively little downtime.
After neurotoxin injections, you may notice temporary redness or small raised bumps at the injection sites. These typically settle fairly quickly.
With fillers and biostimulators, swelling, tenderness, and bruising can be more noticeable and may last for several days depending on the treatment area and your individual response.
Which brings us to an important PSA:
Do not schedule your very first injectable appointment the day before a major event.
Wedding next weekend? Big photoshoot tomorrow? First date tonight? Maybe not.
Give yourself some breathing room. Your provider can help you determine how far in advance you should schedule based on the treatment you’re considering.
Results Aren’t Always Instant
Patience, unfortunately, is part of the process.
Neurotoxins gradually begin taking effect after treatment and typically need time to reach their full result.
Filler may provide an immediate change, but initial swelling can make the area look different from the final result. You’ll want to allow everything time to settle before deciding how you feel about the outcome.
Biostimulators are even more of a slow burn. Because they work by encouraging collagen production, results develop gradually over a series of weeks or months.
In other words: don’t judge the final result on day two.
Your provider will let you know what timeline to expect based on your specific treatment.
Your First Appointment Can Be Conservative
There is no prize for doing the most at your first injectable appointment.
If you’re nervous, say so. If you want a subtle result, say so. If you would rather start small and build over time, say so.
A thoughtful treatment plan doesn’t have to happen all at once.
For many first-time patients, starting conservatively can be a great way to understand how a treatment looks and feels before deciding whether they’d like to do more in the future.
Remember: you can always reassess. The goal isn’t to chase every line or create a completely different face. It’s to create a result that feels right for you.
Choosing Your Injector Matters
Your injector should be someone you trust—not just someone offering the best deal that week. A topic we will be sure to get into next time.
Cosmetic injections require an understanding of facial anatomy, product selection, dosing, placement, facial balance, and potential complications. Your provider should also be willing to tell you when a treatment isn’t the right choice.
Before treatment, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask why a particular product is being recommended. Ask what you should realistically expect. Ask about potential risks and side effects. Ask what the plan looks like long-term.
A good consultation should feel like a conversation, not a sales pitch.
So… Are You Ready for Your First Injectable Appointment?
Maybe! Or maybe you’re still in your research era. Both are completely fine.
You don’t need to arrive at your first consultation with a perfectly planned treatment regimen. You just need an idea of what you’d like to improve—or even a few questions about what’s possible.
At Elara Cosmetic Dermatology, our approach to injectables is centered around thoughtful treatment planning and results that complement the person already looking back at you in the mirror.
Because the goal isn’t to make people wonder what you had done.
It’s to have them wonder why you look so good lately.
